Rain came down in torrents on London of the 1890's. Big Ben's grand chime echoed throughout the darkness, heralding the coming of midnight.

"No," a younger Luke whispered, "No, you can't die." The rain gave Luke his tears as they flowed around his face and drenched his clothes.

"I don't want to either," a man said, fighting through the blood pouring in his lungs, "But it looks like none of us are getting our wish." Luke simply watched his mentor die before him. He was helpless. Helpless to save him. He could only watch him die. That assassin killed him, all because he wanted Luke's time machine. While grief and guilt washed over Luke like the rain, a fire of anger lit within him as he glared into his pocket.

"It's all because of this," Luke said as he yanked out his time machine. His anger burned brighter every second he gazed upon the machine. "I never wanted this, I didn't ask for this," he said as his knuckles turned white from squeezing the time machine.

I WISH I NEVER HAD IT!

He smacked the machine on the wet cobblestone, the sound seemingly echoed forever in his mind as of the rain wasn't even there.

"Luke!" the man yelled, coughing up blood afterwards. Luke immediately knelt down to his mentor's aid. "Luke-pick it-back up," the man wheezily coughed.

"But why?" Luke asked, "That's what the assassin is after, right?"

"That's precisely it. You won't-be able to-go back home-if you don't-have it,"

"That place isn't my home anymore. This place is here, with you,"

"I'm dying,"

"I don't care about that stupid thing anymore. All it's brought me is pain,"

The man gripped Luke's shoulder tightly, his gaze hard and furious.

"Don't you dare ever say anything like that again!" the man said surprisingly clearly, "You're a detective, and what detectives do?"

"Find answers," Luke replied on cue.

"Right, so you have to find that time machine's answers,"

"Yes,"

"So go and pick the bloody thing up!"

Without another word, Luke did as he was instructed. He opened the watch, blue light shining on his face.

"I will find its answers," Luke said as a blue bubble formed around him.

For you, Sheridan.

First part of my audition in Future Battles. God, this is so melodramatic, but I just couldn't write this scene any other way.

 Oh well, at least this'll give you guys the reason why Luke carries on time-traveling and whatnot, despite the fact that an assassin is chasing after him because s/he wants the time machine.
